First, for the big news, I just launched my podcast. Check it out here: anchor.fm/thehustlemindsetshow.

A podcast for everyone with a growth mindset. I (beacons.ai/veerdosi) talk with cool and impactful people regarding their startup, side hustle, or anything cool they are doing and bring up short episodes in an interview format with learnings for all innovators and impact-driven ambitious ones.

I decided that if I wanted to excel at podcasting, I would need to learn how to edit audios and make my episodes even better and unique. I wanted to learn this through audacity. It is one of the best audio editing software out there. Audio Editing is important as it allows you to compress, improve and enhance your audio quality. It is an essential skill for podcasters.

The Process:

  1. Download and Install Audacity from audacityteam.org
  2. I opened it and recorded the trailer through the mic in my webcam. It is a noise-reducing one but well, it couldn’t stop a lot of background noise.
  3. Then, Experiemnetation. I opened up, checked out all the tools on the main panel, and just tested it out on my audio and the changes it made in my audio
The main panel on audacity

4. Like the Selection tool for selecting, move tool for moving, and cut tool to delete a part of the audio.

5. Next I checked the topmost bar and all the tabs there like view, select, and the most important, of course: effects. I entered into the effect tab and found these bunch of tools. I scanned the list and decided to start off with the most obvious one: the noise reduction tool. I recorded noise and then added and removed it, now my audio was much cleaner but still not as crisp.

6. The next tool was the loudness normalized, I just messed around with the values to check out the different effects it makes on these sounds by the waveforms and the audio. Next, I started off at the top of the list and decided to experiment again. I searched about the tools which I couldn’t understand and then added them as an effect on my audio.

I did this with each tool and made a list of the essential ones like compressor, noise reduction, loudness normalization, reverb, fade in and fade out. I recorded one more part and did the same to improve it.

8. The next part: I searched for sounds for podcasts on google and downloaded a free royalty-free library from podcast.co. Now I imported the music on my track. It automatically added itself to a new one.

9. I then decided to do the loudness normalized once again ad reduced it to the background only. Enough to be heard but not enough to interfere with my voice.

10. Then, I decided to export it as MP3 and voila.

TL;DR:

Experiment with all the various effects and tabs available. Don’t be afraid of making a mistake.
